The cleaning problem is slightly different for each one. Choose what you wear to see the cycle we'd start with.
IF YOU WEAR A CLEAR RETAINER OR ALIGNERS
It isn't your brushing. It's the shape.
A clear retainer is a negative of your teeth — every tooth is a little well with corners in it. A brush presses flat against one surface at a time, so the deepest part of each well is the part that gets touched least. That's where the film sits, and that's what reads as cloudiness.
Where we'd start you: the short cycle, about 5 minutes with clean water, every night as soon as you take them out. Run the longer 10-minute cycle once a week, or any night you've let it go.
IF YOU WEAR A NIGHT GUARD
Thicker plastic. Longer in your mouth.
A guard is worn for seven or eight hours at a stretch, and it's a heavier piece of plastic with more surface to hold residue. Most people rinse it in the morning, leave it to dry and mean to do more.
Where we'd start you: the longer cycle, about 10 minutes, each morning while you get ready. Dry it fully before it goes back in the case.
IF YOU WEAR DENTURES OR A PARTIAL
The parts you can't reach are the parts that matter.
Clasps, the underside of the plate and the join between acrylic and metal are all awkward to brush and easy to scratch. Water gets everywhere a brush can't, without pressing anything against the surface.
Where we'd start you: the longer cycle daily, with clean water. Add a cleaning tablet when it feels like it needs more — always check your appliance's own care instructions first.
